At one point we thought we would spend a few days in Malaysia hoping to connect with my 3rd cousin who often works in Kuala Lumpur. It didn’t work out, so since we had already booked a flight from Bali to Malaysia on Air Asia, we decided to book a continuing flight on Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur to Vietnam. This journey was certainly a work in progress. When we arrived in Kuala Lumpur we retrieved our bags and rechecked in, but were then told we needed a visa to enter Vietnam so Air Asia would not let us on the plane until we obtained the visa. We were given directions from the desk agents on how to obtain the visa online and I paid a hefty extra fee to expedite this process. Because it was after 5 pm, it was clear we weren’t going anywhere that evening. This wasn’t fully similar to the movie “The Terminal” but we were stuck at the airport overnight. With some effort we were able to find a nearby airport hotel. We did reach out to Mitch Gelber a former Milton Academy student who lives in Kuala Lumpur. Unfortunately, the timing didn’t work out to connect with Mitch, but the good news was we were able to get the visa for Vietnam and re-book the flight for the next day. We had to pay for new flights, and the hotel night in Vietnam that we ended up being a no-show, the extra night in the Malaysia hotel, and the hefty expedited visa fee, but we did spend a night in Malaysia and had an adventure. Certainly seems like it was meant to be.
I don’t think you missed much. KL seems to be thought of as an ugly sister when compared to other large Asian metropolitan cities. But the Malaysian street food I had in Sydney knocked my socks off. Sorry about your missed Milton connection there, though.
